Sluisy Checking In

It's good to hear from you guys. It sounds like everyone is doing quite well, despite the pressures of actually growing the fuck up. I hesitate to count myself among you all in this regard, as grad school remains a far cry from the real world. I am, however, settling in and slowly feeling the reality of becoming a real person. I still find time to 'get shitty' and 'party down' every so often, but 2nd year is much more real than the 1st. Most of my cohort, myself included, are engaged in some level of qualifying exams. While the vast majority of students pass these exams in my department, they're still a big deal and need to be taken seriously. It involves me proposing what I'll be doing for the next three or four years to a panel of four faculty. You need to be fairly knowledgeable about your field, and prepared to say what you'll do in the very likely scenario of having absolutely nothing work as planned. It's tricky, and requires you to understand how science is done in your field, for which there is no manual. You also need to know what papers are generally considered to be garbage, because if you justify an experiment or method with that paper, you're suddenly in a good bit of trouble. I don't have a date for the exam, but it will likely be in April.

Last semester I taught intro biology lab, which was surprisingly little work and a fair amount of fun. It's a huge class of about 600 kids, so everything was streamlined and a lot of the work was done for me. I didn't have to design or set up any of the labs, so essentially I just walked in the room, talked for a little while, and scared the undergrads for three hours twice a week. I was definitely the 'cool guy' GSI and diligently avoided having to do any more work than I had to. Despite my best efforts, the kiddos seemed to like me, and gave me good evaluations, featuring feedback like, "Aaron is chill," and, "Pretty laid back, good GSI," and a surprising number that focused on my appearance, oddly enough. This is certainly a result of the "GSI effect" where, contrary to all logic and reason, I'm seen as an authority figure who is mature and successful. Those silly girls.

Berkeley remains beautiful, despite the homeless, and the oppressive police force in Oakland. The weather is fantastic and abnormally dry for the season. We've had several weekends with solid t-shirt weather (everyone come to California *cough* *cough*) and I've managed to get out of the lab and outside. I recently got a fairly nice camera, so have been going around taking pictures of plants and mushrooms and things. While mostly staying around town due to the imminent exams, we're hoping to get some trips in the coming months. Hawaii has been floating around, as well as Puerto Rico, but that would probably be in the fall.

I guess we're looking at the weekend of March 9th? I may be able to do that, we'll see. That's just after my girlfriend takes quals (she won't be happy to seem me jet right after she gets her life back, but she can deal), and right before Maize Meeting. The later is a conference for researches who work with Maize (duh) and is purportedly a complete and utter shit show. Apparently it's fairly common for some attendees to stay awake for the entire three days (probably with the help of amphetamines) and be drunk for most of it. Favorable job offers are apparently given to those with the stamina to drink and stay up with the best of them. I can only hope the Michigan prepared my liver for what it is about to receive. Anyway, the weekend in question does fall right between those events, so I might manage to make it out. No promises, but I'm certainly hoping I can.

Hope you all continue to be awesome.

Sybil UNITE

Ok so i wanted a separate post for this so we could argue/discuss this reunion. Sooo I just bought a plane ticket to fly into BWI on 3/1 and will be flying back on 3/11. I would like to see as many of you as possible and am willing to move around the East coast area provided i can cuddle with someone wherever i go, but it might be easier if we all decided on a place to meet up. From what I understand Nathan has spring break on the weekend of 3/9 and Bill would consider that weekend an option too. What do the rest of you think. Also what city do we think would work for this extravaganza? Also Sluis I miss you dearly and want to know what you are thinking about this proposed man love session. Sooo yeah weigh in on your preferences and lets get the planning going.
PS If we get planning fast enough maybe ill finally make the i believy in jake b levy shirts for a wine walk or some other vaguely competitive event.

Yay for blog posting

Hello sybilites,

First off good to see everyone blogging and congrats to Wkbriggs and Scambou. I look forward for attempting to not tell the tackle story to too many of Suz's grandparent aged relatives (but by then ill technically be a MD so if i cause any heart attacks i should theoretically know what to do...theoretically). Let's see what i should tell you all. Life in Cbus is going as well as can be expected. I suppose i should tell you all about this photo. As most of you know, I live with 2 other UofM grads here and we try to get more michigan grads to come to the med school. So we end up hosting a lot of these kids for interviews and we occasionally get gifts like this flag. Since we wanted to keep our windows intact in the house (it gets cold here) we havent hung it up and I promised that if we won I would raise this over campus. So sure enough on the Sunday night after The Game we did a night mission and hung it on the med center flagpole. I felt like it wasnt ok to lower the American flag to do this prank so I put it in place of the state of ohio flag (who cares honestly). It went up around midnight and it was there at 7 the next morning when i was walking to the hospital. Sadly it wasnt at around 11 for lunch break (moment of silence for the flag that was sacrificed in honor of this historic victory).

Overall, 3rd year is way better than the first 2 years. I'm finally out of the classroom/library and spending most of my time in the hospital (with the nurses). I do have to admit I miss the library but I still get to visit, albeit for shorter periods of time. The only real disadvantage is the complete lack of free time, so things like getting my clothes back from the dry cleaners and other normal tasks become a challenge because you're stuck in the hospital during normal business hours. I'm still not sure what I'm going to be when I grow up but I think I have ruled out anything surgical at this point and will end up in medicine. If all else fails I'll probably end up doing Internal Med just for the amount of sub specialty options it has but I still have a bit of time to think about it (aka panic).

I'm currently on Child and Adolescent Psych which is a crazy (literally) service. I'm not sure its something I could do for life but I can say there is never a boring day with this one. I have to agree with Nathan here and say I'm excited to not be going to the real world for another year. But Nathan was so convincing that I am considering DC for residency now and hopefully by then this train will be built so we can make this trip to see Billy and Sluis and Arnold Schwarzenegger too. But its not entirely my choice either as to where i end up. Residency programs interview you and rank you and then you rank the programs you interviewed at and some magical computer decides where you end up so yeah its a ridiculous day in March where everyone get a letter saying where they will be spending the next 3-5 years of life. Fun times. Also I'm about to blog again about this reunion so we can all exchange stories, wine and man sweat in person.

Hearts,
James

Really, Duke, what a tease that subject line was. Not that you or anyone else should be in a hurry to tie yourself in knots.

As for me, I'm set to graduate in May with mixed emotions. There's a lot about law school that I won't miss once it's in the rear view mirror, but I also realize that it's basically the final playpen. I credit that to the lack of any true responsibility and the company of hundreds of your peers in the same boat. Beyond that, the version of adulthood on the horizon, with suits and ties and grinding work hours, just seems kind of jarring. That said, I am eager to just get on with it. I have a feeling it won't be all bad.

Notwithstanding Bill's optimism, and my own zealous love for the Bay Area, I'll be headed to DC to begin work in mid-October. Two years from now, I could imagine applying for a judicial clerkship and using that break to seek a lateral position in California, but that's all guesswork right now. Besides, I'm not moving until they build the high-speed rail [that's never coming] so Sluis and I can show up at Bill and Suz's door in SoCal at 3am when we're tripping.

For now, I'm pleased to be returning home. The city has become truly gentrified in the past few years, and although there are downsides to the yuppie influx, it's mostly good. Not being able to walk around at night or find decent restaurants nearby were never really attractive features for a city, even if it felt a bit less "soft" than the suburbs. My radical plan at the moment is to forsake my automobile and rent an apartment within walking distance of my office, and in the vicinity of Dupont Circle. If that should come to pass, and I think it will, I would be very happy to host any and all future DC reunions. [But my spring break this year coincides with Bill's, and I'm also interested in meeting up, even if it's in NYC this year to be fair to Jake].

For anyone curious, Flopperz 2.0 is almost beyond bunny adolescence, which he has apparently survived despite his steady diet of carpet fiber and paint chips from the floors and walls of my apartment. He's calmed down, and is developing some of that charm that made me so fond of his predecessor, 1.0. He also has full on mutton chops, a perk of the genes passed on by his "lionhead" breed mother. I expect I'll always feel awkward explaining to people that I own a pet rabbit, but so it goes.

Love,
Shanaynay

I thought Duke was Getting Married

So Duke's title made me think he put a ring on it too until I actually read his post. Damn, we could have had a sweet double wedding.

Big news for me is obviously that I'm getting married to some chick I hardly know. There's tax benefits though so there's that. Also, by marrying a future doctor I greatly increased my chances of getting away with being a stay at home dad someday. Most likely wedding date: June 1, 2013 so MARK YOUR CALENDARS NOW. It will be in the beautiful city of Grand Rapids. It is also really far away which means procrastination of planning and Suz freaking out for 18 months. Yay.

I'm also graduating this semester, which is weird. Not sure how the adult world functions or what it's like to be making money instead of spending it. I have already vowed that I will not class up my liquor tastes. Black Velvet will always be my favorite. Although they don't sell it in Cali (because it's Canadian) so I've been panicking about what to do. I'm thinking of buying a case of it in Indiana (yes, they sell it by the case there) if I drive across country to Cali again.

I'll be in the G-Rap for a year bribing and arbitrarily influencing a federal judge before permanently relocating to Los Angeles with the missus to work at a big evil law firm there. Odds on me lasting more than 2 years are slim. Nathan's going to move out to San Francisco to be closer to me (I hope) and I expect you all to do the same.

The week starting February 25th I'll be on spring break. I would love to do another Sybil reunion on one of those weekends. Maybe this time in NYC because I've never been there although I would also be up to doing Baltimore/DC again. I've been practicing my wine walking. I will also be free most of May so I would be up for doing a reunion then too.

Glad to hear those of you who have posted are doing well since the only one I ever see is James (sometimes we go to bars in Farmington on dates. His parents sometimes serve as our designated drivers too, no lie). Hopefully I'll be able to see you guys soon.

Until then, I will be busy making an Afghan for Nathan's mom. I'm also writing a country song for her.

Put A Ring On It

Thanks for lighting a fire, Ace, it's been too long.

I must begin by extending my sincerest and most joyous of congratulations to Big-Boned Briggs on his and Suz's engagement. As the first in Sybil to sign away personal freedom, including late night man-spooning and latin-library rendezvous, he has taken a large leap. Make note of his immaculate hygiene, wholesome appetite, prowess for coining verbal quips / simple nonsense like "I so smart for you," and undying love for crochet. These may all change in unpredictable ways in the coming years. We will always love you, Silly Pony. But seriously, I can't wait for the wedding.

As for yours truly, all is quite good. I've had the opportunity to see Nathan a couple times since the Fall football reunion, but I miss the rest of you. I recently holed up at Starr's pad in NOLA and had a fantastic, head-splitting-hangover type of time. No carrying laws, no societal norms for dress or behavior, and generally no problem doing whatever the bleep you want. My hunch says it's where you go when you die. Having a million Wolverines on site and winning the Sugar Bowl made for an awesome few days. We should seriously consider Michigan vs. Alabama in Dallas for the season opener. Throw it on your imaginary calendars.

Life in Baltimore is good, although I don't always feel like I live here given how much I'm in DC to see the folks and friends, Durham to see Hannah, and of course the occasional NYC trip to fist pump with Jake. I lost about two months of my life November-December for a project at work. My company is unique in that because we have 50 employees, 10 of which bring in the clients and new projects, the supply and demand for working hours don't always match up. I enjoyed the asymmetry in summer but paid for it dearly this winter. Nevertheless, seeing as the work is stimulating (not sexually), I find myself enjoying it. Fun tidbit for those I haven't told, I traveled around for undergrad campus recruiting last fall. Sitting on the other side of the table is quite enjoyable, I must say. You judge people and then memorialize it in ink.

Hannah is doing great and seriously wants to join in on a reunion to see everyone soon. She landed a summer internship at a law firm in DC this summer, which hopefully puts her in DC full-time when she graduates.

Hope to hear from you all soon, whether it be via blog, face time, or surprise visit. Until then, Mashed Potatoes.

Love,
Dutch

Taking the Initative

And posting!

James that was a cop out you need to actually post.

So catching up on me. I went and visited Dylan in Europe as I know you all know since thats why i couldn't meet up for the football game everyone went to. It was awesome went to Munich for Oktoberfest, Amsterdam, Copenhagen and Stockholm. Girls in Stockholm are amazing. Not really believable til you are there walking around. It was an awesome trip. Didn't end up making it to AA til the Nebraska game where I only got to see Billy (but i was actually very ill so it was good most of you weren't around).

At the start of the new year the company i work for went out of business effective immediately so I found myself once again out of a job - annoyed that i was unemployed through no fault of my own. Currently in the process of trying to move to shops. Its been a slow process but I think things are going well and there's a good chance that this could be a really good change if I end up at the right spot

I'm considering heading down to DC for Presidents weekend if anyone wants to try and join up and make a trip of it. As always, any of you are invited to visit in the city and stay with me. I promise we'll find a way to enjoy the city!

Catch me up on the rest of your lives.

Blog ahora

Post something bitches!

Monday, June 20, 2011

Hi kids,

Thought I'd update everyone on what I'm up to this summer.

I'm in LA this summer working for the man. It keeps me pretty busy. They seem to find it valuable to take me out to fancy meals almost every night, which is fun but exhausting. I have gotten the chance to go to Trapeze School on the Santa Monica pier and ziplining in Catalina which were both fun and most likely things I never would have done otherwise. I have no free time, but the good news is the summer is flying by. I'm also doing some work on the side (although I am writing this from my office). Like Nathan, I am also hoping for a permanent offer from my firm, although I will most likely be clerking in Michigan for a year after I graduate. As Nathan pointed out I am living with Suzanne's parents. It may be awkward at times but they cook meals for me and do my laundry so I'm not really complaining. Plus it's always good to ingratiate oneself with a significant other's parents.

Living in LA has been interesting. Obviously the weather is nice, although LA is possibly the only place in the world where half the office shows up in sweaters when it drops to 70 degrees in the morning. The traffic sucks, but even more annoying is the drivers. They're very aggressive and mean.

That's all I've got for now. Congrats to Nathan on Flopperz-2 and his facebook relationship.

Saturday, June 11, 2011

Hi hi.

I had dinner with Annie the other day here in DC and realized that she was telling me things about you guys that I was just hearing for the first time. Bill, you're living with Suz's parents? Duke, Hannah is living with you in B'more and commuting to DC? Apparently NYC has become a hotbed of incest among former residents of SQuad?

I have a new bunny. Hopefully this will not strike any of you as a betrayal of Flopperz' memory, as he is still near and dear in my heart. For those who do not remember, Flops was placed with a lovely family in a suburb of DC. In other news, apparently I have an affinity for rabbits. This is the bun at 5 weeks. He has grown up somewhat since then. Found him on craigslist.

I am doing the summer law firm thing at Winston & Strawn in DC. They've been treating me nice... [I could say more, but I do believe this blog is public]. Hopefully, my 10-week stint this summer will lead to a permanent offer of employment.

I am still dating the same girl. I will be visiting her in SF in early-mid August, so Sluis hopefully we can meet up while I'm out there. It'll be roughly 8/12-8/19. Having never even visited SF, this is a bit premature to say, but I have been kicking around the idea of seeing if the SF office of my firm would have any room for me. Not only because of Carolyn, but also because Winston in SF has a more focused tech intellectual property practice, which is an area I'm especially interested in. So that's a long way off and kind of an outside shot in a lot of ways, but I'll be visiting SF with my eyes open.

To wrap up, I hope all's well with the rest of you. As soon as an e-mail thread gets started, I'm eager to figure out which UM football game we can do this Fall. This coming year of law school should be the equivalent of senior year, so...

p.s. I just found these, and even though the rest of the world apparently has already seen them, I thoroughly enjoyed watching them: http://www.facebook.com/mayhemhere?sk=app_2392950137

Hadn't seen this yet:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UnJX2FiW-ik

Hey fellas!

Time for another round of blog posts?!?
I'll start with a short update from Sluisland. I just joined the lab that I'll be in for the next 4+ years, so that's exciting. I'll be doing work with Maize, mostly focusing on plant development, how tissues are formed, phyllotaxy (leaf patterning), and fun stuff like that. Which means I get to use a bunch of really expensive and fun microscopes, which is just about ideal. I've got my own mutant to work on and everything. I had intended on joining a different lab, but that dude just took a position at Ohio State (Boooooooo!!!!) which pretty much just confirms everything I've ever though about that shithole (well, everything but James, of course). That said, I'm still pretty happy with the way things are going. Berkeley especially is pretty awesome, and if any of you came to visit I guarantee some good times. Also, I think a bunch of us from the program are gonna do Burning Man, not this summer, but the next, if any of you are interested in losing your mind. Oh, and one more thing: the last final I'll ever take (provided you don't count quals as a final) is next week, and promises to be super easy (grad classes are a joke!), so yay!

Things have definitely chilled out a lot around here, so depending on what semester I get pegged for GSIing, I'll be doing a football game no doubt. But if I get stuck with fall semester, we'll have to think of something because I'd really like to see you guys. Would a summer reunion of sorts work out? I'm guessing that because there aren't classes it might work out a little better for the Med/Law school crowd, though now that I think about it, it's internship/residency(?) time, so probs not. At any rate, I've been living well within my means, so can easily make a trip or two out east.

Law school updates,
Med school updates,
Real world updates,
go.

All the best,
Sluisy

DC

Hey fellas,

So James is trying to convince me to come to DC for the weekend of the 25th because it seems that all of you are going to be there. So far it's looking fairly good for me being able to go. I simply need to know if I have a place to crash and a ride to/from the airport (public trans is fine, I just don't know what's out there). So let me know what the situation is, and what days you all are going to be around.

My plan would be to fly in Thurs night (or maybe Fri afternoon) and leave on Sunday.

Hope you all are enjoying the winter. I know I am :)

SNOW!

hey roomies ;)

we just survived the snowpocalypse here in michigan. we were supposed to get 15-25 inches overnight tuesday and something called thunder snow and everybody freaked out. every school in michigan was cancelled, even michigan state (for only the third time in its history and first since 1975). every school except good old michigan that is who continued its policy of staying open during blizzard warnings because "it owes it to its students." seriously the email i got was insulting--instead of saying stay home if it's too dangerous, it said you MUST come to class, no excuses, you can only stay home if you try driving and get stuck. it really warmed my heart out here in farmington to know they were concerned about my safety.

snowmageddon was actually a big let down though. we only got 8 inches overnight and places like chicago got hit wayyyy worse. i slept through my 9 am class and then came in for the afternoon. the roads were pretty bad but not terrible. instead of three lanes on the highways the plows had made one lane. however, since they were drunk while doing this the lane they made through the snow swerved in and out of the lines and multiple times would switch from the middle lane to the right lane for no reason. which meant if you were passing someone in the cleared lane by driving on the snow-covered right lane, you had to be careful because the cleared lane would lead right into where you were with no warning. even worse was parking in ann arbor. my devious plot of never paying for parking and parking on streets like white was foiled by the mountains of snow the plows had put in those spots. after getting stuck twice i decided to park in a structure and support the city of ann arbor.

what else is new? oh last week michigan's basketball team (the men!) beat some team from east lansing IN east lansing for the first time in 11 years. i went with suzanne to prom med school gala last weekend at the motor city casino and got a lap dance from one of wayne's doormen who decided to drunkenly crash the party. he kept telling me i was the most beautiful man alive, so i decided he had earned the right to give me a lap dance.

jamesy, i like your reunion plan, the only problem is that it's right in the middle of my (and probably Nathan's) summer gigs. which means it would be hard for us to get away, even for a weekend. i suggest august or may, although i don't know the exact date of the program so other times may work too. also, wear the ref's jersey with sunglasses, duh.

props to you and jake for keeping up the blog. hope everyone's doing well.

puppies,
bill

The blog...its alive!!

Hello sybil,

Jakey nice work on getting the blog going again. Umm lets see life in Ohio is pretty boring (shocking I know) and school is still kicking my ass so not a whole lot is new on that front. I'm guessing everyone is reeling from the big storm (yeah Sluis remember that day it rained last week?). In Columbus we got freezing rain for two days and then a bit of snow to make it harder to see where its icy so its basically treacherous to walk anywhere but the nicely plowed sidewalks of campus right now and will be like that til probably it thaws in a few weeks. However, since we have a bit of an angled driveway and some of the cars were sliding i did get to use a sledgehammer yesterday afternoon to break up some of the ice so there were at least places the tires could get a grip. If you haven't used one before, i highly recommend it. It was probably the most satisfying day of housework in my life haha.

In other HUGE news, i'm coming to DC in a few weeks! So i'm flying in on Wednesday, February 23rd and i'll be around til Sunday the 28th. I'm staying with my sister but shes working that week and likely some of the weekend (Nathan and Bill i'm guessing you cant wait for life after law school haha) so i should have some time to head out towards places you guys are at or we can have a mini sybil reunion in DC or Bmore (yes Duke i'm inviting myself and am almost done with the facebook invite). Jakey can this be your late Bday party? Nathan isnt it time you visited your parents and let them combat your hangover from a sybil reunion with breakfast?

Also Mr Eggnog (keeping that alive) mentioned summer reunion ideas. So i have this awful exam that basically tests everything you learned over the past two years and determines where you can go for residency (no pressure right) on June 24th and then i was planning on heading down to Florida to my parents place in Naples for a few weeks til rotations start. I was thinking it might be fun if we had the reunion there? Warm sunny beaches filled with old wrinkly ladies!! Sadly that probably sounded appealing to everyone but Sluisy. Obviously this is super early but could be super fun if anyone is interested!

In an attempt to get blog activity going here I have a question for all of you. I'm still coaching disability hockey down here in Columbus kinda like i did at Michigan but now its with little kids. So the kids have wanted to do an intermission show at one of the OSU hockey games and we finally got called last week to do one this weekend. I had fully prepared to cheer against Ohio state at the game BUT then I found out this weekend they are playing Michigan State...who do i cheer for? Should i bring out the ref jersey halloween costume and just cheer on my favorite ref?

I miss you all and cant wait to hear from you soon and for you east coasters see you soon!
Hearts,
James

HAPPY 2011

Hey everyone,
Been a while since anyone posted so I figured it was time to start the blog up again since i don't know what anyones up to! Bill and Nathan halfway through lawschool already?! sheesh hope you two are surviving. Liadis you got an extra year ahead of you but even you're almost halfway done holy cow. Is it too early to discuss a sybil reunion for the summer already? I sure hope not. I already saw Dutch( you should all go visit his place in Baltimore its pretty sweet) and bill a couple months ago but I've missed out on seeing the rest of you since our last reunion. This needs to be rectified.

Anyways, my life has pretty much stayed on course, though i have some pretty unbelievable stories that will have to be saved til we are all in 1 place and can appreciate the ridiculousness of it all together. Suffice to say, I'm enjoying myself in the city. Despite the Jets hard-fought loss, im headed out to vegas in a couple weeks for the superbowl and I'm pretty pumped about it. Its right before my birthday (sorry no repeat birthday in atlantic city) and post bonus, so I expect I will drop more money than i should on food, gambling, alcohol, clubs, strippers and anything else i can get my hands on in the sin city the two days that im there. Look forward to more stories from this trip. I may have a trip to ann arbor coming up soon, maybe i'll run into one or more of you there.

Thats about all I got for now. I'm looking forward to hearing whats up with all of you since you last posted. Peace out kiddos.

Greetings from Charm City

Founded in 1729, Baltimore is a major U.S. seaport and is situated closer to major Midwestern markets than any other major seaport on the East Coast. Baltimore's Inner Harbor was once the second leading port of entry for immigrants to the United States and a major manufacturing center. I'd continue to copy and paste from Wikipedia but we all know this place so well. There are hints of the Wire everywhere. Dark shadows behind my house surface images of Omar's shotgun. Certain crackheads I swear I've seen before. The segway police in Fells Point (where I work) are a far cry from McNulty, however. I moved to Canton a month ago now - a few blocks away from the Natty Boh Tower.
natty boh tower.jpg
I'm also close to the Canton square, which I must say reminds me a lot of South U. Work is stellar. To give you a better idea of what I'm doing, I'd say it involves a good deal of Excel (sweet), math (my worst grade a Michigan) and finance (help me Levy). I'm learning a lot and enjoy the people I work with. We're getting embossed fleece vests for Christmas - jealous?

No? What about now?
pedo-gumby.jpg
I hope more terrifying pictures will surface on facebook soon. Halloween weekend in Durham nearly rivaled Ann Arbor dominoes, ghostbusters, stuck-on-you, etc. Everywhere I turned I had women on my Gumby-junk trying to get a picture. You'd think the non-breathing polyester and mesh eyeballs that gave me the vision of Nathan without contacts would have taken away from the experience, but it made for a trippy night.

- Sluis, your first few weeks in California sound like a mix of animal house, the hangover and ... the Arb. Live it.
- Jake, congrats on passing the final exam. I'm interested in hearing more about what exactly your doing. Perhaps in AA on the 20th? If not, and this goes to all, I'm thinking NYC for New Years (again!).
- Bill, post something exciting. Like about the kid you and Suz are having soon (Buzanne?). I'm calling you this weekend to discuss football tickets. At least 4 of us will be driving up, with at least 3 of us going to the game. Two weeks, "i so scared."
- Nathan, congrats on the girl. I spent ten minutes stalking her after I read "Her name is Carolyn..." before I finished the sentence about the stalking bit - spot on. Back for Thanksgiving?
- James, I will buy that shirt. Come to the Wisco game!

An open invitation to mi casa in Baltimore.

Many loves,
Duckface

California knows how to party

Sorry this took so long, things have been rather busy here on the west coast, and a lot has happened, so this might be a doozey of a post. Suffice it to say that I've been having a good time.

I'm living in a nice little apartment that I'm paying too much for, but it's not a bad deal by Berkeley standards. My roommate is a fellow PMBer (PMB is my department) and a really cool guy. He kinda reminds me of Lipshaw in that they're both short, have Jewish last names (Steinbrenner, though he's not Jewish), and get geeked about things like tea and craft ales. At any rate, he's a really kick ass guy and we get along like peas and carrots.

By far the best part about moving here has been my fellow first years. Without exception, everyone is super nice, super smart, and about a good half of us get blackout on a regular basis, so super fun. Everyone gets along really well, and we're all working together and doing some kickass science. I've never known so many nerds, let alone socially well-adjusted ones. Pretty much everyone just wants to have as much fun as possible, which is super easy to do in Berkeley. There's also a ton of people into hiking/camping, and while we haven't gone on any good trips yet, it's inevitable.

School is fairly tough, but it hasn't been too ridiculous. We only have one real class that's split up into 3 modules per semester. I just finished the 2nd one today, and they've both been rather easy. There's a couple people who already have fellowship money, so grades don't matter at all to them, and they just sleep through class. It's actually kinda rude because there's only 10 of us, but the point is that classes aren't emphasized. It's all about lab work. I'm nearing the end of my first rotation, and feel like I've accomplished nothing. That's not quite true, but it hasn't gone too well. I've been working on generating a DNA library to send of for sequencing, but nothing has been working for me. It should be fairly straightforward, but everything has been a problem. It should work out, but it's kind of a drag. My PI is awesome though. He's probably the only person I've ever met that I'd actually say is a genius. He's probably got some idiot-savant or polymath going on. I met with him for half an hour yesterday and it was all I could do to keep up with him. He does this thing where he pauses, kinda like a stutter, and then just blurts out a sentence. It makes it hard to keep up, especially because his mind moves so fast. Just as you're catching up to what he's talking about, he's two or three steps ahead of you. It's good though, and damn impressive. Dude just pulled down a 2+ million dollar grant from the NSF. He gets shit done.

In terms of time, though, I really haven't had to put much in for school. In fact, three weeks ago or so I went 6 for 7 on getting blackout drunk and high. The first night was supposed to be a chill movie night, but as is all too common, it turned out to be blackout fueled by tequila. The next night I went into SF for metal show that fucking ruled, and the next night was a house party for the first years and anyone else that wanted to come. That in and of itself would have made my week. At one point there was a smoking circle with over 20 people in it, with 4 joints lit at once. Other highlights included mix drinks made with lab equipment, dance party, and the end of a 3-year long relationship (drama!). It was an event. At that point, I planed to chill out for a while, but there was this thing in SF called Hardly Strictly Bluegrass going on. My friend convinced me to go, armed with a dozen beers and something like half a dozen joints. It was held in golden gate park, and was all free. It's exactly like what I imagine Woodstock was like, just on a much smaller scale (although still huge, probs bigger than Michigan football crowd). It was tons of fun. At one point, this hippie was tripping his ass on E, running around dancing. He had on these weird pants-things that came off in the course of his reverie. He was just running around the crowd for a good 5 minutes before he got himself dressed again. No one gave. a. fuck. So chill. Most of the stereotypes you hear about the bay area are dead on. It was out of this world. The next night I did some shit that I don't really remember, but it was fun. Two days later I saw Dead Meadow (DC natives I think) and that capped off one of the most ridiculous weeks of my life.

Shit hasn't been that intense the whole time, but I've been having a blast. The other highlight was the departmental retreat, which was supposed to just be moderately fun, but mostly about hearing research talks and the like. Well, it took place in Tomales Bay, which was about an hour drive from Berkeley in this beautiful part of California. I'm talking really scenic stuff. Anyway, three of us killed a 750ml bottle of Whalers rum (from trader joes, of course) before we even got there. I was just high on life the whole fucking time. We started playing frisbee in this giant circle, and I was running around like a fucking hippie. I almost beaned Pat Zambrisky in the head with the disc (senior faculty, discoverer of agrobacterium, national academy member, and general badass) but thankfully didn't. She did comment that she was impressed that I was able to throw so well despite how obviously wasted I was (this was bout 4 in the afternoon). Alcohol was plentiful the whole time, so things just deteriorated from there. After the keynote lecture, I got about 5 words into a question before I forgot what I was going to say, so just awkwardly stalled until someone finished it for me. This was pretty much my introduction to the department, and such an auspicious one. Brian Staskawics (another academy member and research thug) gave me the nickname "Sluisinator" for that, and that's pretty much stuck. Everyone who went to the retreat remembers my name, so I guess it's not all bad, but it was out of control. After the actual talks, we all just went to a big field and drank, smoked, played guitar, etc. There were several hookups, though sadly I was involved in a triangle situation that wasn't the good kind, meaning one too many dudes. Although, in retrospect, I planted a seed that has since developed into a plant that's very likely to be fucked. Oh, and Staskawics? I smoked him and a few other profs down on the second night, one of whom is my next rotation PI. Other highlights included going to a beautiful beach for a good nap, with oysters on the way back, and a drunk, horny old professor that hit on all the hot female grad students. Apparently people kept trying to put him to bed, but he would escape and get into more shenanigans. I'm not making this shit up, this weekend was legendary. It took a solid two weeks of exchanging stories until I could remember most of what went down, and even then most of it is a blur.

California is a hell of a good time, and you all need to visit. It doesn't look like I'm going to be able to make it out for a game this year, but I promise to make it up at some point. To Duke and Naynay, prop 19 didn't pass, but I'll be getting a card, so you two will have to check out the Cali bud. I've gone through half an ounce since I've been here (I've been sharing a lot) and have a kick-ass bong that you guys need to hit. There's always fun stuff going on, and San Francisco is a short BART ride away. The best weather is supposedly in Sept/Oct, so it's getting somewhat cooler and more rainy (it didn't rain the first two months I was here) but there's still lots of nice weather. It was 74 and sunny today, and I went on a nice bike ride up into the Berkeley Hills, looking over a sweet sunset on the bay.

Peace kids, hope to hear from you soon!

Halloween Edition

So my computer fucking sucks, i spent 20 minutes putting together a post and then it shut down and i lost it. It may have autosaved but I can't find it so whatever. Anyways... Hello fellas.

Its halloween and this is one of the times of the year when i miss college and you guys the most. We have such good memories from past halloweens. I love that a few of us started to post past years' halloween pics and i say we make this a tradition every year! I know you're all dying to hear my costume this year after such previous gems of inside out man, a homeless man who will wurk 4 beer ( I still have the sign) a chip-n-dale dancer, a blind referee, and group costumes party referees/dominos/ghost busters. This past year i went as "the man your man could smell like" if any of you were in a hole and don't know who this man is, let me provide you a link. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EV1nntSBAP4 . I look forward to hearing what all of you were!

I was just at Penn State this past weekend. I drove up with my roommates and another friend and we met up with Tim and Weas. It was a good time for sure, but nothing like the trip senior year. Also, I've now been to 3 straight Penn State games that we've lost...I think i should stop going haha. But on that note, I will be in AA next weekend for the Illinois game as well as going to Detroit for the Lions / Jets game. I hope some of you may be able to join! I may go out for the wisco weekend as well, but its possible this coming weekend will be my only visit during the calendar year.

Finally, I passed the 3rd of my 3 exams a couple weeks ago. Now I can legally steal all your money. But seriously now I can actually be fully functional at my job. I hope to start to be able to do some more sales (taking out clients for food and drinks on company dime which is awesome b/c that means i get to eat and drink for free too) and generally making my mark at the firm. It should be an interesting next couple of months as I begin to learn how to do that more.

Its always good to hear updates from you guys and I really should try and call more often to hear whats going on. Personally, The best time for phonecalls for me is from like 8pm to 11pm during the week so if anyone wants to hit me up then i'd love to chat.

As much as we fucking suck at football I can't help but keep going out there and cheering for us. Its pretty insane I feel like an idiot. Lets cross our fingers and say a little prayer to the Michigan football gods. Also on that note I want to book tickets like NOW for the Michigan-Bama game in 2012 in Dallas.

Anywho I'll stop ranting b/c you've probably all stopped reading by now. Be good fellas.
